Shipping a car you bought at Copart or IAA

Pay for the lot, send us the pickup details, and we arrange a verified carrier from the auction yard to your door.

To ship a car you bought at Copart or IAA: pay for the lot, then send us the yard, the lot or stock number and the pickup details from your auction account. We assign a verified carrier, the carrier books the pickup with the auction, collects the car — running or not — and delivers it to your door.

Does Copart or IAA ship the car to you?

Both auctions offer their own delivery: Copart Delivered, with an estimate on the Payments Due screen, and IAA Transport. Both also let you send your own transporter instead. That’s where we come in: we’re a licensed broker (MC 1786043, USDOT 4511175), and we arrange a carrier to collect the car from the yard and bring it to the address you choose.

Whichever you use, compare the price, ask who will actually carry the car, and check what happens if it’s damaged. Copart says it isn’t responsible for damage caused by third-party transporters — so the carrier’s own cargo insurance is what covers your car on the road.

Step by step: from the auction yard to your driveway

1. Pay for the lot. At IAA the car can’t be released until your payment is confirmed, and payment is due by close of business two business days after the auction day; after that a late fee applies.

2. Release the car to us. Each auction has its own way of handing the car to a transporter:

  • Copart: on the Payments Due page, select the car, choose Send to Transporter and enter info@shifthaul.com. Copart emails us the Gate PIN, and we pass it to the carrier we assign.
  • IAA: since October 6, 2025 every pickup needs a Pickup PIN. You’ll find it on the To Be Paid and To Be Picked Up pages on IAAI.com or in the IAA Buyer App. Send it to us and we pass it to the carrier we assign. Share it only with us — anyone with the PIN can collect the car.

3. Send us the details. We need the auction and yard, the lot or stock number, the year, make, model and VIN, whether the car runs, and your delivery address — plus the IAA Pickup PIN, or Send to Transporter done at Copart.

4. We assign a verified carrier. Before pickup we confirm the carrier on its FMCSA phone and get its insurance from the agent.

5. Pickup at the yard. The carrier collects the car during the yard’s hours. You can’t drive a car off a Copart lot — Copart’s staff bring it to the loading area and load it onto the truck.

6. Delivery to your door. The carrier delivers to your address. Inspect the car before you sign the Bill of Lading, and write any new damage on it.

Storage fees: why booking fast matters

Auctions charge storage when a car stays on the lot too long, and the clock starts at the sale, not when you find a carrier.

  • Copart holds a car at no charge for up to three days, including the day you bought it. Storage fees can vary by location.
  • IAA gives you the time allowed by the branch where the car sits; after that, storage is charged per day, per vehicle. IAA also says the risk of loss passes to you once the car is awarded.

Storage is billed by the auction to you, the buyer. So send us the details as soon as you’ve paid — the sooner the order is in, the sooner a carrier can be assigned. We can’t promise a pickup date, but your dispatcher gives you an honest window.

How much it costs to ship a car from an auction

The price depends on the distance from the yard to your address, the vehicle and the transport type — not on which auction sold it. Estimated prices for a sedan on an open carrier:

  • Copart Fort Wayne, IN to Chicago — about 165 miles, estimated $235
  • Copart Indianapolis to Atlanta — about 510 miles, estimated $405
  • Copart Fort Wayne, IN to Orlando — about 1,040 miles, estimated $745

Estimates based on typical carrier rates for each route. Your final price depends on the exact addresses, vehicle and dates — you’ll see it after a quick contact step, and Price Lock protects it when you sign.

SUVs, pickups and vans cost more than a sedan. A car that doesn’t run is +$150 per vehicle, and enclosed transport is +$450 per vehicle. Try your own yard and delivery ZIP codes in the calculator.

Cars that don’t run

Some auction cars are salvage or don’t start. They can still ship if they roll, steer and brake: the carrier pulls the car on with a winch. Tell us it doesn’t run when you get your price — it’s +$150 per vehicle, shown before you book. A car without wheels or with locked brakes needs special arrangements, so call us first. Title and paperwork

The title comes from the auction, separately from the car. Copart shows its status on your account: Title Pending means it hasn’t arrived from the seller yet, Title Ready means it’s available. You can have it mailed or pick it up at the yard, where Copart charges a $20 service fee. IAA’s rules ask buyers to title the vehicle in their name promptly, under their state’s law.

Registering an auction car — especially one with a salvage title — is between you and your state’s motor vehicle agency, so check its rules before you buy. The carrier doesn’t need the title to collect your car: the Gate PIN or Pickup PIN is enough.

Who carries your car

On every load we verify the carrier: an SMS to their FMCSA phone, insurance from the agent, the driver’s location at pickup, and a VIN-plate check against the carrier’s insured vehicles. See how our verification works. The car is covered by the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance, at least $100,000 — see insurance and claims. Once your car is picked up, we share the driver’s name and phone.

You don’t pay to get a quote or to book. After a carrier is assigned, a $150 deposit goes on your card — it’s part of your total. The rest is charged at pickup, or paid to the driver at delivery if you choose pay on delivery.

Can you ship a salvage car that doesn't run?
