ShiftHaul is a licensed auto-transport broker based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. What it costs to ship a car from Indiana

A few estimated prices for a sedan on an open carrier:

  • Indianapolis to Orlando — about 960 miles, estimated $680
  • Fort Wayne to Tampa — about 1,075 miles, estimated $770
  • Indianapolis to Dallas — about 895 miles, estimated $630
  • Indianapolis to Los Angeles — about 2,110 miles, estimated $1,310

Estimates based on typical carrier rates for each route. Your final price depends on the exact addresses, vehicle and dates — you’ll see it after a quick contact step, and Price Lock protects it when you sign.

An SUV, pickup or van costs more than a sedan. Enclosed transport adds $450 per vehicle, and a car that doesn’t run adds $150. For trips to Florida or Texas, most trips of this length take about 3–5 days on the road once the car is picked up; your dispatcher gives you an honest pickup window.

Interstates across the state

Indiana’s motto is “The Crossroads of America”, and the map backs it up:

  • I-65 runs from Gary through Lafayette and Indianapolis to the Ohio River at Jeffersonville, across from Louisville.
  • I-70 crosses the middle of the state, from Terre Haute through Indianapolis to Richmond and the Ohio line.
  • I-74 runs from the Illinois line near Danville, around Indianapolis on the I-465 beltway, to the Ohio line near Cincinnati.
  • I-69 connects the Michigan line, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, and since 2024 continues all the way to Evansville.
  • The Indiana Toll Road (I-90, shared with I-80 east of Lake Station) runs about 156 miles across the north, from the Illinois line to Ohio. In the northwest corner, I-80 and I-94 share the Borman Expressway toward Chicago and Michigan.

A carrier hauls several cars at a time, so the exact road is the carrier’s choice. What matters for your price is the distance between your two addresses.

Snowbird season

Indiana snowbirds mostly send their cars to Florida between October and December and bring them home between March and May. Southbound prices are often higher in the fall. A quote is held for 7 days, and once you sign, Price Lock covers you: if the carrier’s rate goes up before pickup, we cover up to $200 per vehicle. More on seasonal moves on the snowbirds page.

Winter in the north

Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan falls mostly on the northern counties. National Weather Service reports for northern Indiana describe bands that often reach LaPorte and St. Joseph counties, and sometimes Elkhart. In January 2024 the La Porte weather station recorded 21.9 inches in one day, a record for the site. A pickup up north in winter can slide a day if a band sets up.

Bought a car at an Indiana auction?

Indiana has several large vehicle auctions: Manheim Indianapolis and IAA Indianapolis in the city, ADESA Indianapolis in Plainfield, IAA in Fort Wayne and South Bend, and Copart yards in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Cicero and Dyer. If you bought a car at one of them, we can arrange a carrier to pick it up from the yard — tell us which yard when you book. Dealers buying in volume: see auction transport for business.

Moving to Indiana

New residents have 60 days to apply for an Indiana title for each vehicle with an out-of-state title. It’s done in person at a BMV branch, the car’s VIN has to be inspected — at the branch, or by law enforcement on State Form 39530 — and you need proof of insurance for the plate. Check the current rules with the Indiana BMV.

Students heading to Purdue, Indiana University, Notre Dame or Ball State can find tips on our students page.

Who moves your car

We’re a broker, not a trucking company: we arrange the carrier and verify them on every load — an SMS to their FMCSA phone, insurance from the agent, the driver’s location at pickup, and a VIN-plate check against the carrier’s insured vehicles. See how our verification works. The assigned carrier’s cargo insurance covers the car, at least $100,000.

You pay nothing to get a price or to book. When a carrier is assigned, a $150 deposit goes on your card — part of your total. The rest is paid at pickup on the same card, or to the driver at delivery (cash, Zelle, Venmo or cashier’s check) with pay on delivery.
