How your car is insured.

Your car is covered by the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance. We confirm that policy with the agent before pickup.

How coverage works

  • The carrier’s cargo insurance

Every carrier we assign must carry at least $100,000 in cargo insurance and $750,000 auto liability.

  • Confirmed with the agent

We get the certificate straight from the insurance agent — never from the carrier — and check the policy is active.

  • ShiftHaul doesn’t insure vehicles

If your car is worth more than $100,000, tell us before booking so we look for a carrier with higher limits.

What’s usually covered — and what isn’t

Coverage follows the carrier’s policy. These are the common cases.

Usually covered

  • Damage caused by the carrier while loading, in transit or unloading — under the terms of the carrier’s policy
  • Damage written on the Bill of Lading at delivery

Not covered

  • Personal items left in the car
  • Damage already noted at pickup
  • Mechanical or electrical failures
  • Damage from leaks or poor vehicle condition

Damage claims are made against the carrier and its cargo insurance under federal law (the Carmack Amendment).

If something goes wrong

Four steps that make a claim work.

  1. 01

    At pickup

Walk around the car with the driver and record its condition on the Bill of Lading. Take photos or video.

  2. 02

    At delivery

Inspect the car before you sign. Write any new damage on the Bill of Lading and take photos.

  3. 03

    Within 7 days

Tell ShiftHaul and the carrier in writing — [email protected].

  4. 04

    We help you file

We give you the carrier’s name, MC number and insurance details and help you file the claim with its insurer.

Insurance questions

Do I need my own insurance?

Your car is covered by the carrier’s cargo insurance in transit. Keeping your own policy active is still a good idea.

Are personal items covered?

No. Personal items are at your own risk and are not covered by the carrier’s cargo insurance.

What if I signed a clean Bill of Lading?

A clean Bill of Lading is strong evidence the car arrived without new damage. Inspect before you sign.

Who pays for damage?

The carrier and its cargo insurance are responsible for damage in transport. Claims follow federal law (the Carmack Amendment).

Every load comes with a verified carrier.

The thing many brokers skip — we confirm exactly who has your car, from sources the carrier doesn’t control.
